Ranelle Birkshire of New Lenox and Larry Schwartz of Tinley Park work together to build a tower using paper, tape and other office supplies as an activity at a Thursday, Sept. 11 CERT class. The goal was to build a tower taller than those constructed by two other groups of people, and which could withstand “a strong wind” created by the waving of a spiral notebook. “How many of you have actually pulled the pin on a fire extinguisher and extinguished a fire?” the instructor asked area residents who will, by the end of October, officially be members of New Lenox’s Community Emergency Response Team.

Only two of the 16 pupils at the Thursday, Sept. 11 class raised their hands. More of them are certified in CPR than have ever used or even had to use a fire extinguisher.
