There’s nothing more eye-opening than going through your emails on a Friday and seeing a Google alert that someone has died.

In this case, it was someone tragically young — a boy who had been struck by a semi-truck and killed outside of Lincoln-Way Central High School.

Seventeen years old, with so much more life to live, gone in an instant.

I’ve never reported on a death this tragic. When I was in high school, I knew of classmates who died in car crashes or through other means, but I never personally knew them.
